Not officially required. Settles the car and the accompanying driver for the test.

A driving school is not mandatory: it is required neither by the PUNC rules — the national licensing regulation — nor by the Digesto Departamental, the intendencia’s body of rules. Lessons give you a car and a person beside you at the test.

The intendencia of Maldonado publishes no official register of driving schools — unlike Montevideo — so checking a school against an official list is IMPOSSIBLE here: no such list exists. The price is published by 2 schools out of 15.

    The only school with an official trace on the intendencia’s site. The price and the address hold as of the date that page was published — March 26, 2024; rechecked 08/19/2026, the page has not been updated since. The same Tarjeta Dorada gives a 15% discount on the medical exam for the license — but it is a Uruguayan social card, and someone who has just arrived in the country does not have it. Per the 1122 directory: open Mon–Sat 5:00–21:00, takes every card, offers installments of its own, and teaches for cars, trucks and buses.

    The only address with a street number among all the schools in the department; verified 08/19/2026 — still there. A caveat about the source: the running text on that directory page was written by a machine for search queries («one of the most recognized in the department», «highly qualified instructors») and confirms nothing — there are exactly two verifiable facts on it, the address and the phone.

How it goes on the spot

  • After he passed the theory, they told him at the counter: the driving school signs you up for the practical. The school did just that. No such obligation is written down anywhere, and booking without a school is apparently possible — but do not count on having the other route explained to you at the counter. This is one case in Maldonado in 2026.
  • How you actually get into a school: she found one through reviews, wrote on WhatsApp, was taken on before she even had a cédula, the national identity card — «come with your passport, no problem» — and was handed to an English-speaking instructor. The school offered to book all her exams for her.
  • The first verifiable sum for lessons: about 20,000 UYU for 8 lessons, roughly 13 hours — around 1,540 UYU an hour, at Academia de Choferes Punta. That is one client’s bill for one particular set of lessons, not a price list: the school publishes its prices nowhere.
  • The hours of Academia de Choferes Punta — 07:00–19:00 — and the English-language number 093 312 019 matched what we have on file. Both figures come from the school’s WhatsApp business card.

Important

  • Academia Fénix promises the trámite, the paperwork, free «at the IMM», but the IMM is the intendencia of Montevideo, and the school works in Maldonado. Whether the perk applies here is not confirmed.
  • Academia de Choferes Punta advertises lessons in English («Clases en Inglés») and a separate WhatsApp: 093 312 019. That is the school’s own claim.
  • Not one school confirmed Russian-speaking instructors. And English in the lessons does not change the language of the exam — it is Spanish either way.
  • A threefold spread inside the department: 900 UYU a lesson with the Tarjeta Dorada at Academia Franco, 1,300 at Academia Fénix, about 1,540 an hour by a client’s bill at Academia de Choferes Punta.
