Documents — department of Montevideo
What to bring to every visit that involves papers: medical exam, handing in and paying, practice hours, practical test. The list runs visit by visit, not one paragraph per document. Check items off as you collect them — the marks stay in this browser, and the sheet can be printed and taken along. What you need at the remaining steps is on the pages of those steps; the link sits under the heading of each visit.

The car’s document, not yours. Ask the owner whether the policy is paid up
Needed once — at the practical test, and only for the car you will actually drive. If the car belongs to a driving school or is a rental, the owner takes out the policy.
- Price
- There is no single rate; the price depends on the car and the insurer. The cheapest broker offer is 4,900 UYU a year (Sura, private car).
- Validity
- One year from the date it is taken out. On test day the policy has to be current (al día).

You already have it. Bring the original
Montevideo accepts the Uruguayan cédula, the local ID card, or a Uruguayan passport — and nothing else. The passport of your own country, which is enough in Maldonado, is not on the list here.
- What counts
- A Uruguayan cédula de identidad or a Uruguayan passport: «Cédula de identidad o pasaporte uruguayo, vigente y en buen estado».
- Condition
- Valid and in good condition — that is a requirement of its own, not a turn of phrase.

The only document you have to go and get. Do it BEFORE booking the visit
A certificate from any center on the official list will do — there are 33 of them, all in the capital. Without it there is nothing to book: you book with the certificate already in hand.
- Where
- Any center on the «Instituciones médicas habilitadas» list; addresses, phones and the prices we know are on the medical exam step.
- Price
- The list publishes no prices. Two of the thirty-three have been verified: CASMU 1,270 pesos for members and 1,399 for everyone else, Cavica 1,500.
- Validity
- The list names no single validity period. Cavica states 30 days for its Montevideo location — half the 60 days in Maldonado. Ask at the center itself.

This is the CAR’s document, not yours. Get it from the owner
Needed only by those going on their own, without a driving school: for the lessons and for booking the practical test. With a school car the school covers all of this.
- Restriction
- The car cannot have STX, STU or SES plates: «Libreta de propiedad. El vehículo no puede ser STX, STU o SES».
- Technical inspection
- Required if the car is more than 5 years past registration: «se solicita inspección técnica vehicular vigente». Newer than that, they do not ask.

Not your papers: they are brought by whoever rides with you
An accompanying driver is needed by those going on their own. There are three requirements, and all three are checkable: age, category and time held.
- Age
- From 21 — «la persona acompañante, que debe ser mayor de 21 años».
- Identity document
- A Uruguayan cédula or a valid Uruguayan passport.
- License
- Valid, of the category you need or higher, held for at least two years: «con 2 años mínimo de antigüedad en la categoría o superior».

Practice hours
Step 4: Put in 15 hours of practice
Needed at other visits too, checked off once. The full card is in the section “Handing in and paying”

Opened when you hand in the documents and kept in the file until the test
The paper that proves the mandatory 15 hours. Twenty rows, each with a date, a start time, a duration and two signatures — the instructor’s and yours.
- Who signs
- The instructor, from a school or private: the form has two separate «Instructor particular» fields, with room to change instructor along the way.
- What happens to it
- It stays in the file for the whole trámite; when you take the practical test they keep it, and if you fail they give it back.
